Leading attorneys Susan Stone and Kristina Supler discuss academic integrity and plagiarism
KJK Title IX attorneys Susan Stone and Kristina Supler are pleased to announce a new episode of their Real Talk podcast. The episode titled “Academic integrity and plagiarism – preserving “our originality”.‘ guides listeners through the complex nature of detecting plagiarism and the importance of promoting academic integrity. Joining the two attorneys is Eric Gibbs, president of Ouriginal, an academic integrity software tool that helps colleges, universities and other academic institutions identify written work. Their discussions also include topics related to the impact of pandemics on fraud, concerns about academic file-sharing sites, and opportunities for parents and educators looking to create educational moments for students.
The discussion begins with Susan sharing her experiences of how she and Kristina used to get one cheating case a year and how they are now being inundated with plagiarism cases. Kristina agrees that there has been an increase in these cases of academic integrity. They introduce plagiarism or fraud detection software that can be a very helpful tool for universities and educational institutions to take appropriate action against students who fail to show academic honesty. Eric Gibbs, President of Ouriginal, explains that the tool is not about ensuring academic integrity, but primarily about preventing plagiarism.
In today’s world of advanced technology, certain students are tempted to take shortcuts, which has been made worse by the pandemic. Eric goes on to explain how the global pandemic has challenged both students and teachers with online courses. In addition, there is the issue of academic file-sharing sites, which Eric believes are more serious and have a greater presence in the student community, sororities and fraternities. These unauthorized file sharing sites have even spread to sports teams and science clubs.
The podcast is an eye opener covering some of the most burning issues related to academic integrity, intellectual property and the like. At the institutional level, the “Original” software is available. It will not be sold to individual students or faculty members. The tool was developed to support the institution’s academic integrity initiatives. Parents, teachers, trainers, coordinators and students interested in learning more can click on the link below.
